Common Anime Misconceptions

Welcome to a long-awaited blog, hey everyone in this blog I will be talking misconceptions that not many people talk about as much as the common ones like “anime is childish” or “anime is weird or for freaks” which were made with miscommunication and trolls are talked about too much so I'll put light on other ones. I will assess the pros and cons of each statement but ultimately I will in end be debunking each one. Give this a like if I should do specific misconceptions about certain anime .

Misconception 1 -

Read the manga before the anime!!

- "Manga adaptations should be exactly like the manga"

The first misconception that I haven’t heard anyone talk about a lot is that “You must read the manga first before the anime” which is so elitist and senseless because anime isn’t suppose to be a direct translation to manga, it's called anime adaptation for a meaning. Think of adaptation as recipes. Say manga is the old recipe and someone takes this recipe then tries to adapt it to another palette they have to change it or adjust it for that audience, or they can adapt it however they want while still being recognisable. Another example is a creature being in a hot biome then suddenly brought into a water biome, they have to adapt to it by changing.

I’ve seen many Otakus lose there marbles because an anime doesn’t say exactly what it does in the manga word for word which is an unreasonable reason to get mad over anime if you ever be like this; take a hard look at what you’re doing and realise how degenerate you are being. It is degenerate as they take a cool thing then sink it from a respectable position to a lower debased position which ruins the work for themselves. The Japanese directors and studio team have to change it from the manga to make it more impactful and the original might not slide off the tongue as well so they change it because it may be more natural for said VA. Most of you don't even speak Japanese so you shouldn't even be complaining about this.

The most common example of people being salty because an anime isn’t the same as the manga is “Aku no Hana” This anime when it came out, it had a lot of negative attention, I mean a lot because the anime was a lot different from the source. Which in my opinion is unnecessary because Aku no Hana anime is a near-perfect masterpiece in my opinion (Woah please hear me out, before voicing your negativity about how it is trash even though you only saw 3 episodes and dropped it) Flowers of Evil anime uses rotoscoping which is filmed video that is traced over frame by frame. Rotoscoping is even more work than actual animation because it adds another step to production and that means voice acting has to be way better to fit the realism factor of the anime which they did perfectly. There's also another question that if it should even be anime because it's actors but I think it is an anime as they had to draw other every frame which for me is unprecedented in other anime, that makes it why it's a masterpiece. If it was a live action then it wouldn't have as much attention because of what i said above.

A reason I love this anime is that the weird animation is strangely creepy which in the manga I didn’t get that feeling because maybe it was a me problem as the manga made it harder to convey them feelings. On the other hand, the anime this concept; it was expanded on it ten fold because of the OST and trippy animations that happened which maybe it was just me because I'm more of an anime fan so it might be a bias ideology or just that for me the anime went above and beyond the manga more than expected. The realism of the anime is so much that you start being unnerved by it when Nakamura smiles you can get across her sinister nature which was achieved not as much in the manga. It’s so great because the emotion is amplified a thousand percent in the anime. On top of that the ending song contrasted with the show made it way better as the episodes end on a shocking scene or advancement in the anime then the song comes. It adds more creepiness on to the anime because the song is a perfect example of the creepiness and absurdity the anime has. This is why you shouldn’t judge quality in anime as there’s a lot of anime that don’t have Disney type animation in them and are greater than high production anime like Inferno Cop is way better than Violet Evergarden, the latter tried to be as eye candy as possible which sort of failed as in the trailer the quality was way better than the anime, furthermore missed the most essential part of the show which was the story. Manga should be an addition to the anime not essential to watching but if you want more then you can read the manga if manga is your thing, that's how it should be.

Misconception 2 -

Anime is not realistic

I heard people say anime is bad because it isn’t realistic, this gets more controversial the more I think about it. Realism in anime depends on the type of anime like non-fantasy anime those are the ones when it is acceptable to judge the realism in the anime like Kokoro Connect and Bunny Girl Senpai. Sci-fiction genre still needs some sense of realism and continuity in order to be believable for audience or will fail because it's still science so it has to have sense to it which is only natural. I disliked supernatural anime like bunny senpai as they were supposed to be realistic weren’t realistic; they tried to do the supernatural workaround to get passed plotlines and pseudo-science predicaments (body-swapping) they would start one supernatural situation then in a short amount of time they forget about it without coming to an end of it which made me get tired of it as it just had no sense to it apart from mindless entertainment. Anyway, that is a good reason to dislike something based on realism but let me tell you the bad ones. Realism is subjective to everyone and one’s realism can be different from another one’s

Enough stalling, I will now debunk this misconception. Not all anime has to be realistic because a majority of otaku’s use anime as an escapism from reality, and because anime is so unrealistic people enjoy it as if it was all realistic no one would like it. A good example is slice of anime which a parody of realism, it takes realism that would be relatable to everyone and makes it so unrealistic while being realistic that can be escapism from life. Enjoyment doesn’t depend on reality which is the main reason for the popularity of any entertainment because you can enjoy some that make no realistic sense like Akira which is an alternative reality of Hiroshima bombings.

On the other hand, realism in anime is needed to some extent because there needs to be a middle ground for certain types of anime that focus on reality like school anime but also can be good in other anime where it mixes the line between what is reality and what isn’t like Akira or Nichijou. Also, with some characters realism can enhance the genuineness and quality of development/motives/psyche because if a character was entirely not realism then that character isn’t a human it just comes across as unnatural; like Kirito is a bad character of how bad his realism is. Their controversial parts of this argument like should isekai be realistic? Because that is like on the fence with fantasy and reality but that is for another blog…. maybe. These same people who complain about realism are the same people who hated Aku no Hana because it was too realistic, there may not be any rhyme or reason to any misconceptions but talking about them can be very helpful to people who are don’t know or beginning anime and is fun to talk about, until next time.
