Death Grips in Anime
No one ever said to me you can’t make an anime blog on death grips, well… I’m about to prove no one wrong, oh boy. I thought no one has ever done an anime/death grips blog like this one before, as I try to be more original, you sometimes you got to go beyond the box and think outside it even if it sounds ridiculous. In this blog, I will be taking some songs of Death Grips and relating it to an anime I also added some of my thoughts of the shows to make it not as random, so here we go, yahoo. Warning there will be spoilers in this blog so be warned. Spoilers for Megalo Box, Steins;gate and Assassination Classroom.
Guillotine – Steins;Gate
I haven’t seen Steins;gate 0 so this is just about the first two cours of the show. Lyrics - “It goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes” - Steins;gate being a science fiction masterpiece of an anime uses a very popular troupe, time looping to create an epic psychological spiral that just keeps on getting more traumatic for Okabe. Lyrics - “It goes, it goes” obviously refers to repeating the same timelines over and over. A guillotine was often symbolised for execution and in relation to steins gate it symbolises the tragedies that happens within the show, as Okabe loops when Kurisu dies or Mayuri dies or traps. The protagonist of this epic tale keeps repeating which maybe--- actually... let’s leave the paradoxes out of this, that it could create and that should be for another blog
Lyrics -“Blood stained glass” “screen flashing red” -Related to the psychological development that Okabe faces throughout the first season, it could symbolise that the trauma happens out of left field like in a video game if morbid stuff happens it flashes red so it represents the show. The shock value for this is so amazing that you on the edge of your seat at all time making it a thrilling show, worthy of watching. "blood stained glass" is of course the deaths that take place a lot of times and the screen flashing red is the inside Okabe’s mind being on the fritz from all the looping and his insanity that takes place as he slowly goes crazy like a mad scientist and how it does by just adding on to the ridiculous scenarios making it amazing. Steins;gate is great at developing this psychological spiral of the insanity that Okabe faces and his trauma which is why I like it because it take science fiction and real science or seems like it but maybe its quasi-science; it makes it very believable with all the Einstein level of science that not hardly any shows incorporate. It even made me sad when Mayuri died because of how it built up and set the foundations for it to be so impactful because she is such a wholesome character that you feel for her as Okabe does so you get inside his head which is how what a great psychological should do.
Beware – Megalo Box
Lyrics - “I close my eyes and seize it, I clench my fists and beat it” - In Megalo Box, Junk Dog has to train to get in the top rankings to be able to fight Yuuri in three months so he clenches his fists and beats it. He is going to seize his goal with all his determination, the show being a typical boxing anime; I found it to be very generic and disappointing as it follows or rather copies exactly what Ashita no Joe and any boxing shows/movies do, these mediums the best essence of them are “oh, me at bottom boo hoo, me destroy top brute guy champion arrr” and then have some epic training montages, even though I have to admit a lot of people love them; it’s cliché and has to be done right to actually show progress which the show didn’t spend enough time on. It just played too much into the inspirations which in turn made it a clone; with it being so inspired it’s ironic that in result it become very uninspired and lacklustre. He "closes his eyes" meaning he only sees what he truly desires by looking within.
Lyrics - “bow and behead the beast” - Junk dog has to bow before Yuuri’s manager because Yukiko has connections to the tournament and the boxing industry. Joe wants to behead the beast being Yuri, behead meaning dethroning him because of the corrupt industry he has ties to “On a witch’s leach” is going to refer to Yukiko (Yuri’s manager) he is on Yukiko leach, Yuuri as an antagonist is very weak in my opinion; it’s just like Junk hates him because he is at the top without any real motive and Yuuri is just an undeveloped character so it doesn’t make the conflict interesting for me. Joe being an underdog was seen as very highly acclaimed because everyone loves an underdog story, well… I’m about to rain on everyone’s parade. Cona’s words of truth 1; just because someone is an underdog and is at the bottom is not enough to make a great growth of the character to reach the top, they have to have a great backstory to back it up which the show never really told us about, to think an underdog boxer anime doesn’t have a backstory is the most dumbest thing to me, so that’s why I didn’t enjoy the progression of Joe coming from the bottom to the top as it didn’t get develop well enough.
Lyrics -“Wage war like no tomorrow” - is for Junk Dog getting back at the corrupt industry because of the poor background he comes from; waging war against the unjust system of the boxing industry. The show didn’t really expand on its political overarching story or really anything else as much as I wanted to, most of the show is poorly done in my opinion and not to mention the reality of weaponized metal fighters that could easily kill someone in one hit if someone like Rocky had a exoskeleton, but I said this once and I'll say this again; sometimes you got to get rid of your realism to be immersed. Yukiko being Yuuki’s manager is also one of the leaders for the boxing tournament, so Joe saw how unfair the system was as Yuuki is at the top because he has special treatment; so, he waged a war. I liked that there was a vague political undertone in the show which we don’t see that much in sports anime so I have to give it props for that, but I wish they could have expanded on it more than I would of loved this show.
Known for It - Assassination Classroom
Koro sensei
I have only seen the first one so please don’t spoil for me and take that into account when reading. Lyrics - “Keep ‘em guessing endlessly” - Koro-Sensei is a very unpredictable character which what’s so great about him as it makes him a versatile character which has endless possibilities for the mangaka to work with because he is a creature that we don't know. Koro is a very well made antagonist and protagonist at the same time, just goes to show why a lot people myself included love his persona because what character you know that is the villain and protagonist at the same time, that’s right hardly any and the ones like him (Light Yagami) are in highly acclaimed shows. An unpredictable character is often very misunderstood as the characters are so advanced in there thinking that they are not unpredictable but extremely calculated and smart; say if a character keeps everyone guessing endlessly that means they’re doing it right as if people could guess what they’re going to then they wouldn’t be calculated so that’s why Koro is such a good character because he is actually a genius mastermind.
Lyrics - “known for it, been through it” - Koro being a very deadly villain he is known for being evil to the point the whole world fears him which he is known for and Koro has been through the whole military if has been captured or rather willing to work with them for some reason, he must have been through a lot of trouble from his dark past. Koro as I don’t know his past since I have only seen one season, I have to speculate that he must of seen how evil humans can be for intergalactic beings and decided to cause as much trouble as possible to take back his revenge on the corrupt world. I feel like he is one of the most iconic character because he is so versatile as a persona, every episode is refreshing and enjoyable; making it my favourite show.
Lyrics - “King of unknown cloaked in mystery” - Koro is an enigma, him being an alien probably it’s a mystery of what our octopus’ friend is. Having a character like this just puts the potential to be limitless as he is not human so you can dispense your realism and accept that he can do extreme and crazy beyond human things which helps the anime as it doesn’t have to go by reality. Leaving the story or characterisation aside it even helps with the comedy tag as he can morph into anything like into different faces that helps with his goofy personality which just strengthens the anime to godlike levels making it one of the best shows
Lyrics “extremely selective memory”. Koro, for being the most wanted person in existence he is oddly enough very laid back and nonchalant about a lot of things and life in general for being a super human alien (super-alien for short) he doesn't really need to be high-strung, which helps the show in a way because when a character is too determined or opposite of laidback they sometimes kill the enjoyment of the show as it’s not really realistic so that’s why this show is amazing for me (maybe because I’m laidback too lol) The art of a lazy character is an unappreciated thing in anime, this character type works so well as it relates to most people on what we truly want as people because I think of my dream life to just be as nonchalant as possible just like these character so you like this type as it resonates so much with us. Death Grips lyrics being very random and nonsensical at times it can be hard to relate them to anime but because they’re so random. It can be interpreted a lot of ways so that's why it has so much limitless potential and you might have a different opinion on what it could mean or it might not even represent that anime because you see it one way but anything is your oyster and can symbolise anything if you see it another way.
Thanks for Reading!
