Characters & Story - Neko.Inaru
Hey, Neko here, and as the subtitle suggests ill be giving a run down and my thoughts on the story of Mirai Nikki; spoiler free of course.
Mirai Nikki, or Future diary in english, is in short, a game between players, to the death. Well its not quite as simple as that you see, this one in particular is a part of the sub genre I'd like to call, the survival-game genre. It's self-explanatory, but basically it's where a chosen group of players battle in some sort through means of a game, or multiple games with many rules, or none at all, until one person or team remains. In this show, the whole premise is built on these things called Future diaries. Yukiteru Amano, your normal everyday protagonist is a shy guy with no particular talents or interests who just so happens to be chosen at random to play a game, by the god of space and time himself, Deus Ex Machina. This god turns the cellphones of 12 individuals into Future Diaries, diaries that can predict the future up to 90 days. The goal is to eliminate all other players and succeed the god himself.
Yuki discovers that his classmate, Yuno Gasai, is obsessively stalking him, and is also a holder of a diary. In turn she protects him as they begin the hunt for the other holders. Overall, the story presents itself well, with many interesting characters, though, some could've been fleshed out more. In survival-game type shows you can very often find good shows like Highschool of the Dead and Btooom, or ones that completely flop, like Ousama Game, but I find Mirai Nikki to be on the welllp made side of the spectrum, with of course some faults.
Music - SAGE
The opening theme of any anime is expected to give audience an insight or at least an essence of what is to come, and is likely to give a hint of MC's real emotions. I was pretty hyped up about watching Mirai Nikki, and how the anime has presented it but mainly about the opening and ending. We all find music amusing and when we're talking about openings and endings, I personally like how these give anime a musical lift and also being relevant in the sense of the story, make audience get attached to these.
The first opening of Mirai Nikki is likely to give us a fair idea of what the anime contains and what type characters will be there, and I'd really like to mention how good the lyrics were, presenting the plot and dark - violent theme of anime just perfectly and all that music to hype you up. After watching it in anime, I was compelled to watch the full opening, I opened YouTube and did so. After watching the whole song, I realised that the opening, along with the story plot, also points at Yuno's feelings towards the game and the person she promised not to leave - Yuki.
The first ending, however, sounds a lot more peaceful and intense than the opening. It focuses on the dark - unhappy aspect of the anime and the feelings of our MC - Yuki regarding the game he is stuck in and the person who has promised to not leave his side - Yuno. The way that lyrics has perfectly portrayed Yuki's feelings, telling audience that pretty much hidden side of what he feels about the game and Yuno, we all know that when he came to know about the actual game he was terrified and as the story goes on, he realizes that this all is a big trap and they're all trapped in a tragedy imposing as something rewarding which is a complete lie and this all was properly conveyed through the song - Blood Teller.
Original Soundtrack - Coma
The first volume on the ost is very spacey sounding that could be took as the viewer is being lost as the composition has a lot of random electronic sounds almost messing with your head to feel what the mc feels as he is being vulnerable to all the threats that surround him. The ost has a lot if distortion synthetic sounds almost sounding experimental at times, the sounds are sometimes all over the place when behind a basic beat to set the tone of the series. At time it has some bassy drum sounding synths or just drums that are kind of fast making it feel very energised for then action scenes or uses guitar at times with synths to do this as well.
On volume 2 of ost which some elongated singing over the random synthetic electronics that this ost likes to use and some synths that almost sound Alien or like chimes at certain points making it feel very spooky, this volume actually has a guitar composition in the mix that has a very poppy melodic feel to it sounding almost happy; I'm not going to rewatch just to tell you what scene they used this for but I'd guess it was for happy scene (track 13). Track 14 does the same as well but this song almost sounds like surf pop which is kind of surprising for this type of anime (track 14) At the sad moments in this anime or emotionally as some people would say it has a beautifully calming and emotion filled composition which uses this piano piece in a minor chord with stringed instruments to set this tone, I don't why but I tend to like these type of melancholy music. (Track 15)
Art - Bobo
The art style gives off a horror vibe. In my opinion the art is quite similar to Deadman Wonderland which is also a horror series. You can find the same art style used in the anime Big Order (Same author) Personally, I like the art style especially the characters: cute, likeable, Yandere
