Why Harems Can Be Good

Before telling you why I like the Harem genre, first I have to tell you what a harem actually is for all you newbie anime watchers out there who have maybe never seen a harem anime and none other than the Legend of Amino Coma will explain; A harem is the polygamous relationships between one male specimen and various females or wives, or a love triangle can also be technically a harem. This comes from Islamic culture and Japan the land of everything weird was like “Yoink, I’ll take this”.

First reason, why I like the harem genre in anime is because of fan service, fanservice in Japan is called Fan Sābisu aka Fan Service usually referring to a work of fiction or literature that aims to pleasure the audience through act of sexual or “lewd” or ecchi moments. The reason I like it is that it has its own place in anime to appeal to the teenage males out there because in Japan it’s very popular as there an abundant of Intel’s or virgins so of course studio’s would want to profit off this.

Harems don’t just have a target audience of men as there’s also a thing called reverse harem or female harem or seraglio which has a target audience to females; shows such as Ouran High School Host Club, Amnesia, B-Project and many others. Fanservice is good because it takes away from all the shows that take themselves too seriously that you have to concentrate on what is happening to understand the story. It something you relax down to with its mindless fun.

Comedy in harem plays a big part in the genre and are the most enjoyable part of it as the main protagonist starts off as a normal guy through his daily life he meets various females that he shows kindness, courage or protects them as a result the females get attached to him and ends up creating a harem accidentally. The chaos and ridiculousness of this can get extremely hilarious.

I enjoys harems as it holds something deep to one’s desires, dreams and in retrospect life itself. Something that brings hope into my pathetic life. It’s the Holy Grail of weeb culture, yes that thing is the marvellous thing called waifu’s; harem animes have a wide appeal because they have a whole cast of various beauties with sometimes certain personalities that make them cuter.

Harem genre is great because one thing and one thing only, that thing is the concept of plot. Harems have some amazing plots that are very unrealistic and absurd which makes it something you don’t really see outside Japan and it doesn’t take itself seriously. This amazing round plot that boings up and down when a girl runs, yes, very good bouncy plot.

Now, I like harems somewhat but I’m not going to vouch for every harem anime out there, some shows in the harem genre are so bad there enjoyable in a way which are fun to take the “micky” out of it with some friends or by yourself (I have none ) or on the other hand there are a few amazing ones that brings something new and unique to the genre like Monogatari series, Love Tyrant or Monster Musume.
